Is your child showing behavioural problems and is not communicative to you? Is he/she destructive or breaks things on purpose? Having problems at school? Parent & Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) might make things easy!
As a behavior-based, family-oriented therapy, Parent & child therapy is done to help improve the parent-child relationship through interaction. The therapy has parent & child-directed interaction sessions which can help facilitate the development of effective parenting techniques and reductions in behavioural issues. As an evidence-based treatment for young children with behavioral problems, PCIT may also lead to a stronger familial relationship.

PCIT - The Counselink Approach

PCIT is conducted in sessions in which you and your child spend some time in a playroom while the therapist is watching you interact with your child in an observation room through a one-way mirror and/or live video feed.
In PCIT the parent wears a "bug-in-the-ear" device through which the therapist provides on-the-spot coaching on skills to manage your child's behaviour.
PCIT is done across two treatment phases. The first phase of treatment focuses on establishing warmth in your relationship with your child so that the child feels calm and secure. The first phase treatment may have the desired results like:
❖ Increased feelings of security & safety in children
❖ Developing an attachment to the parents
❖ Increased self-confidence & attention span
❖ Increased social behaviours like sharing
❖ Decreased frequency of tantrums
❖ Decreased activity levels
❖ Decreased negative attention-seeking behaviours
Managing the most challenging of your child's behaviours is done effectively in the second phase of PCIT therapy. Here, you will learn proven strategies to help your child respect house rules and demonstrate appropriate behavior in public. The child will also learn to accept your limits & comply with your directions.
The results that should come out of the second phase of PCIT include:
❖ Reduction frequency of destructive behaviour & aggressive behaviour
❖ Increased respect for house rules & compliance with adult requests
❖ Improved behaviour in public
❖ Increase in parental calmness and confidence while enforcing discipline.
PCIT can be completed within 12-20 sessions with consistent attendance and completion of homework. Even though treatment is not time-limited, the treatment is considered complete when there is vast improvement in parent-child relationship and the child’s behaviour.
